Ranked 17th in the world... only three Korean Universities among the top 20 universities

Hanyang University had the 2nd largest number of patent applications among domestic universities according to the World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO)'s International Report. This result ranks 17th in the world.

On March 4th, the Korea Intellectual Property Office said that South Korea ranked 4th in the world in the number of international patent applications for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) last year, right behind China, the United States of America and Japan. The number of applications for PCT surpassed 20,000 for the first time in history and doubled in 9 years after surpassing 10,000 for the first time in 2011. The increase in the number of PCT applications in Korea is significant as it was achieved during a global economic recession, largely due to COVID-19.

PCT applications from universities, small and medium-sized companies and large companies increased 17.6% and 5.6%, and 2.2%, respectively. The top 20 universities on the PCT application list included three universities in Korea: Seoul National University (12th), Hanyang University (17th), and Korea University (19th). Six universities were listed in the U.S., including California State University (1st), 9 in China, including Shenzhen University (3rd), and 2 in Japan, including Tokyo University (10th).

Meanwhile, the Korea Intellectual Property Office plans to actively promote the PCT system by holding joint briefing sessions with the WIPO for small and medium-sized companies, universities, and public research institutes. They are also planning to work with the WIPO to make it easier for Korean companies to use the PCT system.
