Highlighting the importance of knowledge-sharing for Asia’s impact ecosystem

Hanyang University’s Global Social Innovation Foundation (Director: Shin Hyun-sang) participated in the 2025 AVPN Northeast Asia Summit, held on April 23 at Tokyo Midtown Conference Hall, where it presented Korea’s strategies for impact measurement and management (IMM) and discussed future collaboration opportunities.

Hosted by the Asia Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), the summit brought together stakeholders from across Asia, including impact investors, foundations, social enterprises, universities, and international organizations. AVPN members include global institutions such as UNESCO, UNDP, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-koo Foundation, the University of Chicago, the University of Sydney, and the National University of Singapore. Hanyang University is the only Korean university in the AVPN network.

The event, attended by over 250 participants, began with welcoming remarks from AVPN CEO Naina Batra and a keynote address by Hideo Ishizuki, Director of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Morning sessions focused on strategies for impact investment and social value creation in Asia, followed by in-depth breakout discussions in the afternoon.

Director Shin chaired the session titled “IMPACT LIVE: Translating Measurement into Action”, where experts from Japan, China, and the Philippines shared practical IMM cases and strategies.

He also led discussions with representatives from key East Asian institutions such as JFRA (Japan), Maker Sustainability Consulting (China), and Bayan Family of Foundations (Philippines), addressing field-based IMM frameworks and performance-driven action strategies.

“Through this summit, I witnessed how seriously Asia’s impact-oriented organizations are engaging with social value,” said Director Shin. “Since its founding in 1939 on the principle of ‘Love in Deed and Truth,’ Hanyang University will continue to advance field-based, interdisciplinary research for the development of Asia’s impact ecosystem.”

The Global Social Innovation Foundation was established in 2023 as a presidential-affiliated organization at Hanyang University to serve as a platform for education, research, and practical engagement in social innovation. The foundation actively participates in global networks such as Ashoka U, the Talloires Network, and AVPN, and since 2018 has collaborated with Stanford University to publish the Korean edition of the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR).
