Hanyang University Global Social Innovation Foundation(Shin Hyun-sang as Director) announced that its members were invited to participate as panelists at the 26th University Education Innovation Workshop held on August 27 at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus of Sungkyunkwan University. Approximately 300 representatives from more than 150 universities and related organizations nationwide attended the workshop and aimed to explore ways to create sustainable social value through educational innovation.

The workshop, hosted by Sungkyunkwan University Center for Innovative Higher Education(C-School), was themed ‘Strategies and Measures for Successful Coexistence Between Universities and Local Communities.’ The entire event was streamed live on YouTube, enabling active participation from both onsite and online audiences.

At the event, Kim Eun-jung from Hanyang’s Global Social Innovation Foundation introduced educational programs that integrate curricular and extracurricular courses based on design thinking for sustainable communities. She shared a case study on program operation where students were engaged in solving real issues local communities face. This included a Living Lab project linked to local stores, student-led design thinking–based problem-solving education, and organic connectivity between curricular and extracurricular programs. She emphasized that students defining problems, creating prototypes, and conducting experiments can contribute to building sustainable communities.

Kim Eun-jung emphasized, “Cooperating with local communities is not a mere side activity in university education but a core process where students experiment with what they have learned and create social value in real-world contexts. Hanyang University will continue to grow as a platform that designs future innovations together with the local community beyond university level.”

The Global Social Innovation Foundation outlined universities’ role in regional collaborations at the workshop and shared innovation cases with other participating universities such as Chungnam National University and Hallym University. They also discussed various models of cooperation among universities, local governments, and communities, confirming the potential for joint programs and coexistence strategies. Going forward, the division plans to expand regionally based curricular and extracurricular programs and strengthen connections with domestic and international universities and institutions to develop into a global Living Lab network.
