Hanyang alumni honorees, Yang Seung-gyu and Park Joo-hyung take home this distinction

According to the announcement from the Architectural Institute of Korea on November 22nd, Yang Seung-gyu (Class of 75, Urban & Real Estate Development, KEPCO) from the Graduate School of Real Estate Convergence, and Park Joo-hyung (Class of 2012) from the College of Engineering won the Best prize at the 2019 Digital Architecture Competition.

Both Hanyang alumns applied for the Digital Design & Fabrication category. Yang Seung-gyu exhibited "Power Equipment BIM VR, AR," and Park Joo-hyung presented "Intensive City." Hanyang University graduates won two of the top three awards in this year's competition, where the grand prize winner is nonexistent.

Yang Seung-gyu exhibited the use of digital technology, VR and AR, based on BIM technology to improve the understanding of the officials from the design and construction stages of power facilities and KEPCO office buildings. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology that integrates and manages all information used into 3D shapes and data throughout the life cycle of building design to demolition. Yang said, "I am honored to be awarded at this competition where outstanding works from various fields related to construction (industry, education, and research) were contested."

Park Joo-hyung said that his work, 'Intensive City,' intended to present architecture using higher-level intelligence machinery and technology. As the subject of production shifts, from humans to machines, with higher levels of intelligence and performance, Park tried to convey a message that architecture will continue to be planned, produced and replaced in a continuous, single configuration, creating space with tight efficiency. "I am grateful for being highly appreciated, despite the lack of content," Park said. He added, "It is all thanks to Hanyang University's Architecture department, which has provided a high level of education, experience, and opportunities."

Meanwhile, the 2019 Competition in Digital Architecture (DA2019) is co-organized by the Architectural Institute of Korea, the Architecture & Urban Research Institute, the Korea Appraisal Board, and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology. Also, sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the competition has been held every year since 2000 in order to pioneer new building information fields, promote building information infrastructure, and spread the perspective of building information. The Prizes will be released on this website: (http://www.digital-architecture.or.kr).
