Outstanding performance in 35th place

"RACE," an automobile club of Hanyang University's Department of Automotive Engineering (Supervisor: Professor Lee Tae-hee), participated in the FSAE California Knowledge Event from November 2020 to April 2021. RACE was in the limelight as they were the only participant from Asia.

FSAE stands for Formula SAE, an American Society of Automotive Engineers, where students set up virtual companies and compete to make small racing cars. The FSAE California was held in Nevada, with 48 teams from North America, including MIT, Cornell University, Columbia University, Caltech, Michigan University, Georgia Tech, and two teams from South America. Hanyang University's RACE was the only team from Asia. This competition was RACE's first time participating. They ranked 35th out of 51 universities with the high-performance E-Formula vehicle with an in-wheel driving system that has a driving system inside the wheels.

The FSAE's Knowledge Event is a competition where teams and cars are evaluated through documents and presentations before the Validation Event. Participants gave a total of three presentations on design, cost, and business regarding design reports and structural correspondence forms. The review was conducted through reports, presentations, and real-time question-and-answer sessions. They couldn't participate in the Validation Event, an actual vehicle test, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and delays in cargo transportation caused by the Suez Canal accident.

Lee Sang-jin (Department of Automotive Engineering, class of '16), president of RACE, said, "Thanks to the FSAE, we were able to apply new technologies such as the in-wheel driving system and monocoque manufacturing method using an autoclave to the self-made car for the first time in Korea." He also said, "I learned a lot and would like to say thank you to all the team members who took a leave of absence and participated in the FSAE tournament enthusiastically."

Based on the experience gained through this competition, RACE aims to participate in next year's FSAE competition in Japan. RACE is attracting a lot of attention for their high technology, such as integrating a torque vectoring system into cars for the first time in Korea last year.
