Stepping outside the rigid framework of education and cultivating research ecosystem at global level

Dr. Lee Ki-jeong (63), a professor from the Department of English Language & Literature at the College of Humanities, was inaugurated as the 16th President of Hanyang University on March 2, 2023. The official ceremony was held at the Paiknam Concert Hall in district of Seongdong-gu, Seoul at 10:30 AM. In his inaugural speech, President Lee expressed his unwavering determination, stating, "New challenges must follow for a giant leap at Hanyang's centennial."

President Lee stated in his inaugural address, "We will step boldly outside the rigid framework of education to nurture talent that crosses the borders of capabilities." He also emphazised, "We will not only make decisive investments and provide support to cultivate a creative research ecosystem at global levels, but also aggressively foster global research challengers through creative motivation."

The inauguration ceremony of President Lee was attended by domestic and foreign dignitaries, as well as 1,000 members of the university staff. Among the notable attendees were Kim Chong-yang, Chairman of the Hanyang Foundation, Kim Eun-mi, President of Ewha Womans University, and Jung Jin-taek, former President of Korea University. President Lee's term is four-year.

President Lee, who graduated from the Department of English Language & Literature at Hanyang University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, returned to his alma mater as a professor in 1994. He held various important positions such as the Vice President of the Office of International Affairs (2010-2018) and the Chair of the Internationalization Committee (2019-2021). In addition, he served as the Chairman of the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test Committee (2007) and the Chairman of the International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS, 2019-2021). In 2017, he was awarded the Order of Service Merit, Red Stripe, for his contributions to hosting the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade and facilitating internationalization at domestic universities.
