Taking the first step in a foreign land is always filled with excitement and tension. For international freshmen starting their academic journey amidst a new language and culture, this is even more pronounced.

On February 26, the 2025 Freshman Orientation for International Students(OT) was held. This event was designed to help international students beginning their studies and life at Hanyang University quickly adapt to the campus environment and easily access the information they need.

The orientation was divided into two sessions. The first part introduced Hanyang University and included crime prevention education from the Seongdong Police Station. This was followed by traditional Korean cultural performances by Hanyang University’s “Pungmul Group” and a Taekwondo demonstration by the Seoul Midong Elementary School Taekwondo instructors to celebrate the new students’ arrival. The second part of the orientation provided in-depth education on academics and staying in Korea, tailored to different language groups.

Kim Han-seong, the Vice President for International Affairs, stated in his opening speech, “Around 14,000 international students come and go from Hanyang University annually,” and added, “I hope that global talents will play important roles in their home countries or in Korea after graduation.”

The event was supported by the “Global Saranghandae” members, consisting of both Korean and international students, who provided advice and assistance to the new students. Park Min-joo, the Assistant Manager of the International Admissions Team, said, “Through this event, I realized that Hanyang University is not just an academic space but a true platform for forming a global network.”

Pung Ak-kyung, a international freshman in the doctoral program in vocal music, expressed, “I will pursue my bachelor’s, master’s, and now my doctoral studies here at Hanyang University,” and added, “I look forward to continuing my studies in an excellent academic environment.”

Hanyang University’s International Admissions Team operates programs to support Korean language education, mentoring, cultural experiences for international students, global project internships, employment and entrepreneurship consulting, and 1:1 counseling on academics, life, and psychological support, helping students settle into their school life smoothly.

Assistant Manager Park shared, “During this OT, we explained the comprehensive support system for academics and post-graduation employment, guiding students to prepare for their careers step by step from the beginning,” and continued, “Additionally, we promoted various events organized by the General Student Council and Hanyang University Club Association to increase opportunities for interaction with Korean students.”

International students who are living in Korea for the first time face challenges in adjusting to the language and culture. Park added, “We are strengthening Korean language classes and administrative support for international students to help them get familiar with the Korean administrative system and way of life, as well as offering practical assistance through networks with senior students.”
