A Ceremony of Encouragement and Welcome

The ceremony opened with congratulatory remarks from event hosts Kim Min-kyung and Nan Jin-hong, staff members of the Office of International Affairs. In his welcoming address, Han-sung Kim, Dean of the Office of International Affairs and Professor at the Department of Sociology, declared, “You are now part of the Hanyang family. The orientation focused on creating a warm, supportive atmosphere for international students. Multilingual brochures and welcome kits in diverse languages, including Korean, English, and Chinese, were distributed. Performances further added to the celebratory mood, including a spirited cheerleading stage by “RHooters,” Hanyang’s cheering squad, and a taekwondo demonstration by the Seoul Midong Elementary School Taekwondo Performance Team. Kim Hyun-ju, Team Lead at the Office of International Affairs, explained, “We prepared these performances so that the joyful impression of their first day at Hanyang will last through to graduation for students.”

Guidance for a Safe Study-Abroad

Beyond the welcome ceremony, practical education was offered to ensure students’ safety while studying in Korea. Police Captain Kim Woo-hee of Seongdong Police Station provided crime prevention guidance, illustrating examples of crimes students might inadvertently commit or fall victim to. She emphasized the dangers of carrying weapons, bicycle theft, illegal filming, and drug-related crimes, urging students to “always take care to ensure a safe study abroad experience.” She also warned against drug-related sexual crimes recently occurring in clubs, stating, “If you suspect you have been victimized, do not hesitate and immediately ask for help from police.”

Overcoming Language Barriers with Tailored Programs

Team Lead Kim also highlighted language as a key challenge for international students. “Since TOPIK Level 4, the admission requirement, may not be sufficient for actual academic and daily life, we designed customized sessions by language group in the second half of the ceremony,” she explained. In these sessions, students received detailed guidance on academics, visas, and residency—essential information for their stay in Korea.

Please enjoy your college life at Hanyang to the fullest while staying healthy in both physical and mental states, and always remember that the Office of International Affairs is here to protect and support you.”
