Hanyang University's Making and Sharing Kimchi celebrates its 9th anniversary
Hanyang University alumni social volunteering group, Hamkae Handae, an incorporated association, planned and implemented the event
"We wish love can be practiced through small volunteering works"
On December 16 of last year, Hanyang University held the 'Making and Sharing Kimchi of Love' event. Sharing its 9th anniversary, Hamkae Handae, inc., a Hanyang University alumni social volunteering work group, Seongsu General Social Welfare Center, Hanyang University alumni, and students participated. Here is a talk with Director Kim Young-soo of Hamkae Handae, about the detailed stories of this year's Making and Sharing Kimchi event.
Hamkae Handae, a Social Volunteering Work Leader
Hamkae Handae started as an alumni social volunteering group in 2012. Hamkae Handae started by celebrating the 18th anniversary of the Hanyang University social volunteering group, the first among domestic universities. It consolidates the alumni society and it shares the idea of 'Love in Truth and Deed', Hanyang University's founding spirit, with the local society.
As Hamkae Handae became an incorporated association in 2016, the goal of it was also expanded. As it could gather more people's willingness, external projects are actively ongoing. Especially, it is spreading Hanyang University's volunteering spirit from local society to overseas volunteering from Cambodia to Mongolia. Kim said, "In the process of Hamkae Handae started out and being shifted to an incorporated association, Hanyang University became able to pursue a sustainable development of the local society."
Making and Sharing Kimchi
Before Hamkae Handae held the Making and Sharing Kimchi event, it had a briquette delivery sharing service. It lasted until 2019 and a lot of people including Hanyang University alumni and students participated to share warmth with the local society. However, the demand for briquette delivery gradually decreased and Kim planned a new sharing event. Kim replied, "We started the kimchi making with the Seongsu General Social Welfare Center. As the event's scale got bigger, it became an event that Hanyang University students, alumni, and faculties participate in."
Kim, while planning the Making and Sharing Kimchi event, put a lot of meaning on Hanyangians being 'together'. He explained, "Volunteering has many forms and shapes but what counts was that we were together. We were able to maintain the founding spirit of Hanyang University while volunteering for the local society."
At last year's 9th Making and Sharing Kimchi event, around a hundred volunteers took place. The event shows a gradual participation rate and many volunteers participate in various ways of participation. Kim said, "I am thankful for those who took place at the Making and Sharing Kimchi despite the cold weather and also to those who support us monetarily. The kimchi volunteers made was delivered to 840 households."
Kim emphasized that the nature of the event is at being 'together'. He replied, "Kimchi making is just a small action but I think being together with volunteering spirit is meaningful. It was a precious event that one can experience the founding spirit of Hanyang University, 'Love in Deed and Truth'."
"Volunteering is a bridge that connects oneself and the world"
Anyone invests money and time in one's own future. Kim says that while making one's dream come true is important, dreaming of a society that one wants is also important. He delivered, "One small volunteer work can help you make the world that you want. I wish all of us could be a person who dreams of a world where volunteering spirit is overwhelming."
Lastly, he emphasized the importance of volunteering work. "I wish you could be a person who thinks of society and is ready to devote yourself, rather than being a selfish one. Be a person who can dream of a world where your dream and wish exists."
