The Hanyang Paiknam Memorial Association (Chairman Kim Chong-yang) announced on the 12th that it has selected Prof. Kim Joung-ho from the School of Electrical Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) (Engineering Award) and Professor Emeritus Park Su-kil from Hanyang University (Music Award) as recipients of the “2025 7th Hanyang Paiknam Award.”
Prof. Kim is the key figure who conceived the fundamental concept and structure of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the core technology of AI semiconductors that Korea became the first in the world to successfully commercialize and establish through design. He has driven the growth of Korea’s semiconductor industry, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, and is recognized as a world-renowned scholar in the AI semiconductor field.
Prof. Kim leads the technology vision through 2038 by presenting the “Next-Generation HBM Roadmap (HBM4–HBM8)” and contributes to leading international standardization and securing technological leadership. Last February, he received the 8th Gang Dae-won Award (Circuits and Systems field) in recognition of his contributions to HBM technology development. Additionally, over 30 years, he has published 712 papers in international journals and conference proceedings related to HBM, received 34 best paper awards, and produced 115 master’s and doctoral students, significantly contributing to the development of advanced semiconductor talent in Korea. He has also led international technology exchanges by collaborating with big global tech companies, including Google, NVIDIA, Apple, and Tesla.
Prof. Park Su-kil has been active as a baritone representing Korea’s vocal music field since his opera debut in 1968. After joining Hanyang University College of Music as a full-time lecturer in 1972, he was appointed as a professor at Sungshin Women’s University in 1978 and as a professor at Hanyang University College of Music in 1984. In 2003, he served as Dean of Hanyang University College of Music, dedicating himself to nurturing future generations as an educator.
He also founded Yeoul Music Stage in 1993 and has contributed to music development as both a performer and administrator by serving as Director of the Korea National Opera and Cochairman of the Korea Opera History Museum Organizing Committee. Internationally, he has served as a judge for prestigious international competitions, including Germany’s München ARD, Italy’s Ferruccio Tagliavini, and Japan’s Schubert Society. He has received numerous awards, including the Order of Cultural Merit, Korea Academy of Arts Award (Music Division), Seil Art Song Award, Korean Music Association Music Award, and March 1st Cultural Award.
The Hanyang Paiknam Prize was established to inherit and develop the spirit of Dr. Kim Lyun-joon (Paiknam, 1914–2008), the founder of Hanyang University, with recipients receiving a total prize of KRW 150 million. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at Hanyang University next month on the 16th.
